How to Register for TIN in Nigeria

There are several reasons why obtaining a TIN is important for both individuals and businesses in Nigeria.

What is a TIN (Tax identification number)

The TIN is a unique 10-digit number that is generated by the Joint Tax Board for proper identification, tracking, and tax purposes. 

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in collaboration with the Joint Tax Board is responsible for issuing TINs to individuals, companies, businesses, and organizations in Nigeria. 


Types of TIN

There are two types of TINs in Nigeria, 

  • TIN for individuals
  • TIN for non individuals (businesses)


How To Get Your TIN as an Individual

Here are the steps to Obtain a TIN for Individuals in Nigeria:

  • Visit the nearest Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office.
  • Ask for a TIN application form from the reception or customer service desk.
  • Fill out the form completely, making sure to fill out every space with an asterisk symbol.
  • Sign the form and attach all required documents.
  • Submit the form and documents to the relevant person at the FIRS office.
  • The FIRS will review the application and contact the applicant regarding the issuance of a TIN.

Recently, the government made it possible for individuals to have an automatic TIN once they get their Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identity Number (NIN). In order to check whether  you have been automatically assigned a TIN, you can use the verification portal.



TIN Registration Process For Non Individuals (businesses)


Getting a Tax Identification Number (TIN) is an important step for non-individuals like limited liability companies, incorporated trustees, enterprises, cooperative societies, MDAs, and trade associations to properly identify and track their tax obligations. 

Here is the process for obtaining a TIN for non-individuals or businesses in Nigeria.

 

  • Visit the Joint Tax Board (JTB) TIN registration portal: This is the first step in the process of obtaining a TIN online.
  • Enter the required information: After visiting the JTB TIN registration portal, you will be required to fill out the application form, making sure to enter the necessary details in the respective fields.
  • Complete the application form: Once you have entered all the required information, make the appropriate selections that apply to your business and complete the application form. After completing, click the 'Submit' button.
  • Upload required documents: You will then be redirected to another page where you will be required to upload the necessary documents listed in the 'required documents' section of the page.
  • Wait for approval: After submitting the application form and necessary documents, your application will be processed for approval. The officials will then verify the information and documents you have provided. In case of any issues, you may be contacted to provide additional information or documents.

  • Receive TIN via email: After about ten business days from the date of application, your non-individual TIN will be emailed to you. It is important to note that this period may sometimes stretch to about two months, depending on various factors.


Documents Needed When Applying for TIN

The following papers or documents are required when applying for a TIN:


For individuals:

  • A completed TIN application form
  • A verifiable form of identification such as a national driver's license, international passport, national identity card, or certified birth certificate
  • A utility bill


For registered but not incorporated businesses:


  • A completed TIN application form
  • Application letter
  • Business name registration certificate
  • Utility bill


For incorporated companies:

  • A completed TIN application form
  • Memorandum & Articles of Association (MEMART)
  • Certificate of incorporation
  • Particulars of the company's directors
  • Statement of share capital
  • Utility bill


Please note that when submitting the necessary documents, one must present the original and two copies of each document.

 The originals are only needed for sighting and verification, while one copy is left with the FIRS and another will be signed and stamped by an FIRS official as proof of your application.
